An implementation study of the “SmarterSleep” educational interventions: reducing hypnotic prescribing in psychiatriccare

Alastair Paterson

This presentation focuses on a study assessing the impact of educational interventions developed by co-design process on the prescribing and administration rates of hypnotics on 8 pilot inpatient wards at one trust. The study also looked at staff confidence self-rating scores both pre- and post- intervention in the use of medication and psychological strategies in improving disturbed sleep. The interventions were favourably received, improved staff knowledge and were associated with a reduction in hypnotic prescribing rates.
