Synthetic and naturally occurring macromolecules are often complex mixtures of many molecules differing in molar mass, as well as in other structural features such as comonomer content and distribution, branching, or end-group functionalization. One-dimensional separation methods like size exclusion chromatography (SEC) or interaction chromatography (IC) are usually not sufficient to resolve such complex mixtures due to limitations of the separation mechanisms. Given the multidimensional complexity of such samples, hyphenated separation methods are increasingly applied for their characterization.

In a 2D-LC separation, separation is first achieved by one feature (e.g. comonomer content) followed by a second separation by another property, such as size. This allows determination of the correlation between different structural features such as the dependence of chemical composition on molar mass.

In this webinar, our speakers will present the concept, different approaches for technical realization, and industrial applications of 2D-LC in polymer separations.
